I am currently submitting degree program curriculum changes which include adding two new tracks to the original Biomedical Engineering Technology associate of applied science degree.
I'm submitting the following but I have until mid January to make this name change more relevant.
    1. Engineering Technology,  Biomedical
      1. Engineering Technology, Healthcare Computer
      2. Engineering Technology, Medical Device Manufacturing
What are you, HTM Educators and industry leaders, think of these following proposed names?
The computer track will be geared for BMETs who will be working new position's created in my area for Biomedical Engineering Information System Specialist.

    Morning Alberto,

Sounds like a good curriculum change. The names also sounds appropriate. Could you possibly send me the syllabus for each of these. I would really like to take a look at it and see if there is anyway I can get these changes through at my school? jdeater@mhc.net

Also you probably will want to post this question on the Educators Blog. If you are not part of that one contact Danielle McCreary and ask to add to it.

    Thank you and Merry Christmas,

I can definitely send you or anyone copy of the proposed tracks.
I want to elaborate more on the manufacturing specialization here. The medical device manufacturing track is something I should have proposed much earlier. Companies here are wanting to work with my program and have already hired my students. I'm changing only a few courses to better prepare a graduate for that specialization.
We have small companies that focus on implantable devices, so the production is low but the skills needed are very high. Then we have companies on the mass production side, who don't really design medical devices but rather work out the industrial engineering details for manufacturing.
To my surprise and relief, all three tracks I'm submitting (biomedical, healthcare computer, manufacturing) need a good understanding of computer networks, medical device connectivity and medical systems security.
So our success will be better understood by looking at our syllabi on top of the degree programs. I only post the generic syllabi on our college website, keeping the detailed version with weekly schedule on our LMS.

Sounds good. I would like to read through the more in-depth syllabi. I really want to make our program fit for multiple venues as you are doing.  How has your enrollment been? If I might ask.

I have been told that we have a good group that are entered into the program but I may not have any this semester actually in the Biomed Class. That would suck but knowing they will be coming is good.

I graduated 3 out this fall and have a fourth being done in the Spring. The fifth person is already working for us. He was a roll of the dice. He is working out great doing very well.

At this point I have two others being hired with our hospital or a competitor which I am fine with. So of the five 3 are employed or going to be shortly. We will have one more to get in if we can. I see it as a successful first class!

I recommend cohorts. I start a new cohort each fall. The increased math requirements for the engineering technology courses were part of the reason for the drop in my enrollment from 20 each fall to 15. But it's picking back up. I have a a new cohort building up right now, who plan on having their college Algebra and Precal completed before fall 2019.
The cohorts help keep my attrition low, so I would average about 18 per graduation. (Spring graduation)
I do get a few students who fall behind and end up finishing the following fall semester like this year. I had two graduates walk the stage last week.
I'm doing alright but I'm going to need to increase my graduation rate based on what looks like a large shortage of HTM's coming up. This shortage is mostly in hospitals.
I still have manufacturers in my area that realized my graduates make great medical device manufacturing technicians.
I visit every hospital, biomedical research facility, medical device manufacturer I can. I have to do it on my own time because the college, initially, doesn't understand our value in these areas.
My journey in Clinical Engineering started off in research, supporting scientists with experimental designs through developing prototype devices for lab animal research to medical devices and sensors in the human patient trials.
HTM has so much more to offer. Speaking of lab animal research, I worked on veterinary equipment. So I train our students to work on our own colleges veterinary equipment for the vet tech students. We have real patients, puppies and kittens from the animal shelter,  and that provides students with the opportunity to see the importance of a high ethical standard in their work, prior to going to the hospitals during their clinical.
I can write another  paragraph with our biotechnology instrumentation course.  Coming from research, I worked with and worked on, many of the devices we now see in Molecular Medicine.
HTM is big. I'm reminded of the scene from the movie JAWS, which I'm old enough to say, I saw it at the movie theatre when it first came out.
"We're gonna need a bigger boat".

Yes the numbers need to increase from all of us. This was only my second semester teaching the Biomed class so we are still in our infancy and getting the word out about the program. I have gotten General Networking to be included in the program. I know it isn't ideal for medical networking but it is a start and better than none.

Again being new to instructing, I am a CBET also for over 20 years and still working that full time. I am kind of out there on my own for what we do. The school really doesn't have any idea either so I am having to educate everyone about what biomed is.

Any input is welcome, thank you Alberto,

One more thing about the computer track. If any hospital out there is looking to create this same position of Biomedical Engineering Information System specialist, please consider the following name:
Biomedical Engineering Information System Technician or BEIST for short.
I would like to see a HTM make the call that when a traditional BMET needs a BMET with Information System's specialty to take the work order, the we say
"This looks like a job for a BEIST", pronounced liked Beast!
I think it will catch on.

    That's funny. I like it.
